Hey Colleen, This is a great diary with great pics of your wonderful trip. Thank you fro taking the time to put it together! My husband and I are driving down from San Diego to San Ignacio on February 17th to spend 3 days at the lagoon with the whales (my lifelong dream). I am very excited. In your day 2 agenda, you mentioned that your dad had mapped out all the gas stations in Baja. Do you have that emailable by any chance? That would really help us. I hope to take lots of pics on our trip too. Thanks so much, Laura O.

Coleen, I was born in Baja, actually in the Valley of San Quintin. I was doing a search about the English Cemetery and its history when I came across your diary. I ended up reading your diary instead. I enjoyed it so much because it brought back memories from my childhood --the beautiful Baja landscape, its people, and all of the other experiences you noted in your travel entries. Great job! Adios. Fernando Ortiz

Thanks for the journal re Meling Ranch. I recently read in our local paper that Duane is looking for a buyer or she may go bankrupt. That brought a flood of memories for me. I also didn't know the ranch was reopened much to my delight. I criedwhen I read about Aida's passing and the subsequent closure, knowing I could never go back to my past. I spent a couple of weeks each summer working there in my teens with my best friend for room & board (& horseback riding) almost 30 years ago. Yikes! The place is magic. I was delighted to hear you say the magic is still there. I always wondered if I would feel the same if I went back. I remember Aida, Duane, Mary, Bertie & Salve (Aida's parents). It was the

I read your entire trip log and loved it. I too have spent many weeks in Baja over the past 28 years and have visited ALL the places you covered in this log. You have done a beautiful job of capturing the flavor of Baja. I was particularly interested in your comments on the Meling Ranch as I first stayed there in 1954. I met the incredible elder woman (can't remember her name)who ownded the ranch, and Aida, and Bill Berre, and many of the other people that were there at the time. We went on to spend 14 days on the San Pedro Martir Plateau with Meling guides and pack animals. What a fantastic experience. I was 16 then. Thanks for your narritive. We just got back from a 15 day exploring trip of the tip of the Vizcaino Penn

Coleen ,your photos and web skills are truly exceptional. My efforts pale in comparision to the simplest of yours, even the early shot of you with your horse at the mellining ranch tells a story. One of the regrets of my life is not discovering Bajasooner. When I was living at Enrique Mellings lodge at San Telmo he and other of his boyhood friends took me all over the back country that no one except the cowboys ever sees, such beauty and the abundance of wildlife is almost unbeleivable. One afternoon returning from the old Melling Santa Cruz mine we watched 2 baby wildcats chase quail while their mother sat and watched them. You have a beautiful family and are so lucky to have so many Baja experinces. Hope you have many more.

ONE OF THINGS I REMIND OTHERS TO DO INCLUDING MYSELF IS TO KEEP A DIARY AND TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS OF THEIR BAJA TRIPS TO SHARE WITH OTHERS OF THIS WONDERFUL PENINSULA THAT HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER. I HAVE BEEN TRAVELING THROUGHOUT BAJA SINCE 1969 AND I WISHED I HAD KEPT TRAVEL LOGS OF MY ADVENTURES AS WELL AS TAKENED MORE PHOTOS. GREAT JOB! DENNIS

Loved your trip report, Coleen! My wife and I are planning a similar two-week trip in late October to some of the same places (PSF, BOLA, San Ignacio, etc.) although we'll most likely start and finish from San Felipe where my family has a vacation home. I thought WE were the only people who obsessed about farting and all things scatological when we traveled though - I'm glad to know we're not alone!

What a wonderful story. Your trip took me miles and miles away from this fast paced way of life. I truly love and crave the wonderful feeling of mexico. I also traveled as a young girl to mexico and now as an adult I have shared my love for this country with my husband and he also has grown to love this place as I have. Now we both try to escape as ofen as possible even if for short weekend trips. Thanks for the absolute spectacular quick mind getaway!
